Happy 6 Months Taiwan!

That's right everyone- today is the 6 month anniversary of my jet-lagged arrival in Taichung.  In some ways, it seems like I've been here sooo much longer than that.  In other ways I can't believe 6 months have already gone by.

I'm not going to lie- I have not been in a particularly celebratory mood this week.  But today I finished a 12.5 mile run (more about that later) and realized that I have lots to celebrate.

Back to back Team Canada wins and a UNC win over Duke!  Y'all, I love sports- especially olympic hockey and college basketball. So I was super excited to watch the end of the UNC-Duke game (sorry, I had class during the beginning)

My roomie Joy had no idea what a perfectly colored scarf she made me!
It may be after 2 am in Taiwan but I'm always awake for Canadian Hockey!
 (and Don Cherry's crazy blazers)

I have health insurance. I have been to three doctors in the past two weeks, and it cost me $30, including all medications, etc.  Total.  That's insane. If you want the details of medical care in Taiwan, keep reading.  If not, skip to the next bold words!
So my first visit was to the "western" doctor, when I had a horrible headache. Going to the doctor is easy- give them your ID card, they call you in to see the doctor, you are examined.  Thankfully, every doctor I've seen in Taiwan speaks English- which makes my life much easier, as I don't have medical Chinese. But the "western" doctor gives you LOTS of medicine.  Like 4 pills to take every time your head hurts.  And while I think he gave a pretty accurate diagnosis (migraine or other severe headache) he couldn't give me much advice to actually fix it.  Also, I spoke with the doctor for about 10 minutes and was done!  A lot faster than my visits to doctors in the States (or Mexico, Paraguay, Morocco…)
My next visit was a dentist appointment.  This was my first visit in over a year and a half- the joys of no dental insurance!  But for the low low price of $3 USD I got my teeth cleaned and checked for cavities!  Dentist appointments in Taichung don't appear to be a fancy operation like they are in the states- but for $3 I don't need fancy.
My last visit was this morning to the delightful "traditional" doctor.  My friend Ruby invited me and my flatmate to go with her to the doctor (the second time, if you've read my blog previously) so off we went.  After getting some major chiropractor-style adjustments (and being told I was in the worst condition of all three of us) I am hoping I feel some much needed relief.  I also was asked if my arches are real, which is probably the strangest question a doctor has ever asked me.  According to the doctor my arches make it seem like I am always wearing high heels.  Which begs the question…why aren't my legs as awesome as Mariah Carey's? I also received lots of gross tasting (but helpful) traditional medicine to drink.  And to go back to the doctor sooner rather than later next time.
This is the normal gua sha instrument, which I have and can use myself (usually on my neck.)  Today at the doctor they used a special machine so they could get all up on my scalp to suck out the tension and get my blood flowing!
I ran 12.5 miles today.  Yep, that happened.  And it almost didn't.  On lap 8 of 10 I wanted to quit.  But then from behind me I heard "Go! Go! Keep going! You can do it!" Thank you random American stranger in an orange shirt.  I wish Taiwan had some sort of missed connections thing so I could explain to him how much that meant.  But I finished all 10 laps (and only walked the last 2 blocks!!!) So 13.1 here I come in less than 21 days!
This is where I am running, according to my half marathon's Facebook page!
I am going to Kuala Lumpur next weekend!  4 day week plus a vacation!! Yes please!!!

A new definition of success. I don't generally think of myself as a successful teacher. In fact, it's one of the reasons I consider leaving Taiwan instead of staying for another year (still not decided…when I know you'll know) But this week I was forced to think about my definition of success, especially on my run.  Sometimes I am successful- I taught one of my students an entire conversation lesson where he spoke for over 1 hour based on Olympic hockey (Molson's beer fridge, let me know when you're coming to see me! I could be a commercial!) But mostly I don't feel successful, and don't think I should be teaching. So I think about what I could be good at, can't figure it out, and wake up the next day and keep teaching.  Not really a recipe for being a transformational teacher.
And as I thought about this while running, I thought about Sydney Crosby.  Sydney Crosby is a legend y'all- he scored the game winning goal over America in the 2010 Olympics gold medal game.  But you know how many goals Sydney Crosby has scored this Olympics? Zero.
Y'all, sometimes even people who are good at what they do, the best in the world at what they do, still fail.  No one is perfect all the time. Circumstances have defined my success in the past.  And I'm not afraid to say that I have failed. But if Sydney Crosby can keep going out on the ice, so can I (the ice = the classroom.)  So I'm going to keep trying and recognize that no one is successful all the time.  And just because I can't see the tangible results of my work, maybe I am supporting someone. I hope I can make the next 5 months (and probably more…) here in Taichung really count!

That's it for me! I'll be busy never getting out of my bed and cheering on Team Canada tomorrow! Check back next Sunday (maybe Monday?) for pictures from Kuala Lumpur!

Australia and the Lantern Festival!

Hi y'all!
Sorry for my extended absence.  The joy of travel.  I have had a wonderful first week back in Taiwan after an AMAZING trip to Australia with my dad…I'll start there:
Day 1: Travel Day
Me on the totally fantastic Scoot Airlines!  They surprise upgraded me!
Lots of  leg room even though they don't feed you:(

Me at the Singapore Airport.  Don't judge, it's 1 am!
Day 2 The first day in Australia:
Having arrived from the USA and Taiwan, we were a little sleepy (or, in the case of my dad, a lot jet lagged). So we wandered around by the hotel (Swissotel Sydney, a place I'd highly recommend as well) in downtown Sydney, or as they call it, the CBD (Central Business District.) There was lots of shopping and cafes to explore…but we were very tired.  So instead we decided to work on our tans by the pool!
The Queen Victoria Building- a beautiful building that is now a shopping center
 (How perfect is that?)

A rough day of mimosas and reading by the pool (relocated to the shade after I began to sunburn as usual)
Day 3 The day I conquered my fear of fireworks:

On Saturday, we explored more of the Sydney CBD, including some serious shopping on my part. Also some serious receiving of Christmas presents! (thanks to all who sent them with my dad!) Taiwan shopping can be a…challenge certain times for me.  Women here are very small, and it was nice to be somewhere with more American sized clothing! We headed down to Darling Harbour that night, where we were able to see some fireworks celebrating Chinese New Year!
So fireworks are not usually my thing…but far enough away, when they are over the water, I was surprisingly able to appreciate them!  It was a nice way to still celebrate the Lunar New Year even though I had left Taiwan.
Darling Harbour at night!
Day 4: The day I learned about hills:

Fun fact: Taichung, Taiwan is very flat.  Sydney, Australia, is very hilly.  And hot.   So when I woke up in the morning planning a nice little 10 km run, I thought it would be easy.  After all, I had run 11 miles the week before.  But I was WRONG.  And after arriving back at the hotel, we decided to walk some more around the Sydney Harbour area...
Oh hey, Sydney Opera House.  We'd be back to go inside in a few days...

And the Harbour Bridge.  Yes, I hear climbing it is awesome.  But having conquered my fear of fireworks this trip, I was not going to test my luck and try to conquer my fear of heights as well.

I wish I owned a boat...
And then we were off to the Paddington area and Oxford Street shopping.  We walked to Centennial Park (a lovely park that I would NEVER suggest walking to from Sydney CBD) and arrived, tired but excited, to see a new movie- Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.
We are happy because we have finally arrived at the park and get to sit down!
Big screen, pretty sunset…life is good.
Also, Mandela is an awesome movie and you should all go see it.  Unless you live in Taiwan, because I don't think it's coming out here…

Day 5: The Beach
Y'all, I love the sun.  And while it doesn't love me back (unless you consider constant burns love) I can't stop loving it.  So Monday we were off to Bondi Beach!  The most famous beach of Sydney (and maybe all of Australia?) Bondi is beautiful!  And thanks to some great suggestions, we knew about the Bondi Icebergs…
That's right, a pool, right on the ocean.  People actually swim here.  All the time.  Even when it's cold. It's a saltwater pool that waves frequently crash in to- and the perfect place to lie out for some serious sun time.  Plus, when you swim there is a 0 chance of sharks.  I find that appealing.
And of course, the ocean is beautiful too!
Also, if you head out to Bondi yourself, two suggestions: The restaurant at the Icebergs club is the perfect place to enjoy a pitcher of Sangria and a beautiful view!  (bonus: you can also watch the Super Bowl) and DO NOT MISS Gelato Messina.  Best Gelato I have had outside of Italy.  Most unique flavors of gelato anywhere!

Day 6: The day it rained
Yes, it was bound to rain one day while I was in Sydney.  There was a lot of time this day spent shopping…getting some tim tams (the best cookie ever), shoes, a water belt (I'm sooo cool), a dress…y'all, shopping in Australia is dangerous.  Especially if you go at the beginning of February, when all their summer stuff is on sale.
(I don't have any pictures.  If you want to see all the cool stuff I bought you'll have to come visit me!!!)

Day 7: The day I got to pet a koala!!!
Wednesday was our day of getting outside of Sydney.  My dad and I hopped on a bus and headed out to see some things you can't see in Sydney.  First we headed over to see the beautiful Three Sisters.  It was nice to get out of the city of Sydney and get some fresh air.
We like fresh air! (even though it's colder than in Sydney!)

The Three Sisters!  Beautiful!

More beautiful scenes!

How did I get these pictures!  The super terrifying gondola!

What do you think?  Is the ride worth the view?
After the Three Sisters we were off to the Featherdale Wildlife Park!
This was one of my FAVOURITE things we did!  You can really get up close and personal with the animals- even pet them!  And while I don't have a picture of me petting a koala (my dad hasn't sent me his pics yet) it was AWESOME!
KANGAROOS!

KOALAS

Tasmanian Devil! We watched him for probably 10 minutes and he literally never stopped moving!

Penguins!
It was a long day, and we returned to our hotel exhausted but in time for Happy Hour!

Day 8: The day we got classy
Thursday was a very exciting day for me- the one thing I had been in charge of planning before the trip was our outing to the Opera!!!  That's right, we didn't just go see the Sydney Opera House- we went to an actual Opera! We saw Carmen, which was fantastic!  Seriously, the Sydney Opera House is not just pretty- they have great talent!
In the morning we looked at pretty boats...

It was cloudy in the morning, but cleared up in the afternoon for some pool time!

We had dinner at Aria, which is perfect for Pre-Theatre dining!

And the food is delicious!

Inside the opera house (y'all, I pick great seats)

Pre-opera selfie!

The view of the bridge from inside the Opera House
Day 9: One last day in the Sun!
Friday was our last full day in Sydney before heading back home.  We spent the morning on a boat tour around the Sydney Harbour and surrounding areas!  This was PERFECT because it was sunny and beautiful!
We're on a boat!

But not this boat…this is a big boat!

The Manly ferry, which we would take later!

Y'all, Sydney is beautiful. Why did I have to leave?

Working on my tan on the boat!

My future home…
We loved the boat so much we had to take another one, so we went off to Manly beach for some more fun in the sun!
Views from the ferry!

Can you imagine if this was your commute every day?

Manly Beach- the waves were rougher than Bondi, but just as beautiful!

Beach selfie!
Day 10: We have to go home?
Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end.  And so I departed for Taiwan Saturday, after saying goodbye to my dad (who headed back to the States a few hours after I left)!  It was a great trip- I can't wait for my next family/friends visit- in May when my sister and friend Jenn come to see me!
Still, I got a send off in style...
Scoot, do you know I write a blog and gave me a whole row to myself so  I'd say nice things about you?
More of Australia I will explore on my next trip...

Chilling in the Sunflower Garden at Singapore Airport (with my Dunkin Donuts, which was also really exciting)

Me in the Singapore Airport- after I worked out in their in-airport gym!!!! ($10 USD for use of the gym and a shower- the best money I've ever spent in an airport)

The free movie theatre at Changyi Airport- where I saw most of Man of Steel during my layover!

I'm back in Taiwan!
Of course, I arrived back in Taiwan to another holiday…Lantern Festival!  So here are some pictures from when my flatmate and I went to the Wenxin park to see the lanterns!
We arrived right before it got dark and they turned the lanterns on!

So many lanterns…these were done by high school students!

The centerpiece lantern.  Although I don't know if Lantern is the right word for something this big

Some more traditional lanterns!

Llama Lantern!  Y'all…it's even pink.  This is my spirit animal.
That's it here!  I'm planning for a much less stressful week this week (Olympic Hockey watching excepted) so check back next week to hear about my plans for next semester, experience with the NHI (doctors) and whatever charades I get caught up in! I cat believe it's less than's than 2 weeks til my next adventure to Kuala Lumpur!
